Preplanning |
|
We are able to serve the patients' needs more effectively when plenty of
time is given to arrange a flight. Generally, one week's notice allows us
enough time to coordinate our activities. Other travel considerations, such
as ground transportation and overnight accommodations, are not handled by
the VPA. Smoking is not permitted, and restroom facilities are not available
aboard the aircraft. Passengers prone to motion sickness must provide their
own medication if permitted by their physician.

|
|
There is limited space on the aircraft |
|
The aircraft used for VPA flights are typically smaller than most people
are familiar with, and they have limited space and weight carrying capacity.
Generally, the aircraft's seating will allow for the patient and one, or
possibly two, traveling companions. One or two small (carry-on) overnight
bags, weighing up to a total of 75 pounds, can usually be accommodated.

|
|
What does it cost? |
|
There is no charge to any passenger for a VPA flight. All flight expenses
are donated by the VPA pilots as a personal contribution. These expenses
may be in excess of $500 depending on the length of the flight and the type
of aircraft used. We have many pilots who donate several flights each year.
Funding for administrative activities is raised through individual and
corporate donations.

|
Alternate transportation |
|
Since adverse weather conditions, mechanical problems, or other events
may cause a pilot to cancel or delay a flight, passengers and agencies
must have backup transportation plans. We attempt to complete every
flight as scheduled, however, the safety of our pilots and those we serve
is of the utmost importance.

|
|
Waiver of liability |
|
Patients are required to obtain a physician's statement prior
to the flight verifying that this mode of travel is appropriate for
their condition. Additionally, all passengers (patients included) are
required to sign a waiver of liability form prior to the flight. We may
ask permission to use photos taken on the flight for publicity purposes.
